Hello Book Study Participants,

For our next book study meeting, we will be discussing Module 7. Please be prepared to discuss the following:

• Consider the three stages of Ehri’s Sight Word Development. Do the progress monitoring assessments you use help you to identify where your students are on this continuum?

• Establishing our understanding: What is phonics and what do students need before they can benefit from phonics instruction?

• When is contextual guessing OK to teach and when is it inappropriate? How might assessment practices help inform the appropriateness of teaching contextual guessing?

• For secondary educators: Take a look at table 5.2 on page 48. How might you use this information to better understand your older students who are experiencing reading struggles? Regarding the developmental stages, where are some of your struggling readers “stuck” in their reading development? What might effective intervention for older students look like?
