How to Use This Coaching Guide

How to use this coaching guide:

Purpose: This coaching guide was created for instructional leaders to facilitate a deeper understanding of the assessment and intervention practices outlined in the Equipped for Reading Success online course as well as the book by the same title. The coaching guide can be used by an instructional coach or through peer coaching as part of a Professional Learning Community or as PD for grade-level teams.

eLearning Courses

The coaching guide can be used with seasonal online professional learning sessions that CDE offers every spring, summer, and fall or a coach can use the content from the open-source, guest-access version of the course to facilitate the book study.

Meeting activities are outlined in the guidance below, with resources included in the resources folders. Meeting topics are in conjunction with the online course modules and include discussion prompts. Some include additional activities to be done between meetings. A timeline was not included as facilitators should schedule meetings according to what works best for participants’ schedules.  

Pre-Meeting Communication

Before each meeting, be sure to send an email with information and a calendar invite for the up-coming meeting. An email text for each meeting has been provided for facilitators to copy and paste. These email texts can be altered to fit the specific needs of the group.

Discussion Questions and Activities

The prompts listed for meeting discussions are suggestions. You do not need to use all of them and if there are topics not covered by the listed prompts, feel free to go off-script. The additional activities are designed to support participants with implementing the assessment and intervention practices included in the course and book. These too are suggestions. Facilitators may feel the need to adjust the activities to best suit their participants.

Authentic Tasks

Authentic tasks are activities for participants to complete on their own, between meetings, to further their learning and the implementation of the practices covered in the modules.
