The Steps of the Validation Process
The ideal way to use the validation process is through a structured protocol as a part of a professional learning community (PLC) that meets regularly, so that trust can be built and collective knowledge over the course of the efforts in which everyone gets a chance to learn from each other's work and feedback.
The validation process includes:
Step 1: Pre-work
The group identifies a "presenter", who is the teacher seeking feedback on their performance assessment. The presenter brings multiple copies or provides a digital folder of their performance assessment for the group to review, including teacher directions, student directions, rubric (optional at this stage), and student work (optional at this stage). The presenter customizes a feedback collection tool to be used during the protocol; while paper versions work, a digital option allows for easier analysis of quantitative data.
Step 2: The Protocol
The group selects a "facilitator" to guide the team through the protocol. The facilitator overviews the process norms, invites the presenter to introduce the performance assessment, and provides time for the group to examine the assessment materials and ask clarifying questions. Then, the facilitator leads the group through scoring and providing feedback, asking team members to come to a consensus about whether the performance assessment adheres to the Design Elements. The presenter then has an opportunity to reflect on the feedback and consolidate what they have learned from colleagues. The protocol ends with a debrief on how the team has honored its norms and an opportunity to reflect on how to strengthen the process the next time.
Step 3: Revision
The presenter revises the performance assessment based on feedback from colleagues and insights generated during the protocol.
Supporting the Process
Sometimes it is helpful to have everything all in one place. Create a copy of the Validation Protocol Form here. This is a google forms document. Once you make a copy, you can change the questions, add/delete, etc. based on the type of feedback you are seeking, and to provide additional context for your task.
Please feel free to use the slide deck below to guide your protocol.
