  • Kilpatrick discusses the 3 Stages of Phonemic Awareness Acquisition. What are the implications for instruction in the classroom?

    • Multi-sensory Stage

    • Knowledge stage

    • Automatic Stage

  • What does Kilpatrick say about letter recognition?

  • Let’s look at the Phonological Development Chart on p. 235. How could you use this chart to differentiate instruction?

  • Appendix A in the back of the manual provides a bird’s eye view of the entire phonological training program. What do you notice?

Activity
  • Practice some scaffolding for syllable level together: Spend some time practicing the Whisper Technique with your book study peers.

  • What are some other oral cues you would like to practice?  (using tokens, tapping/clapping, stretching and repeating sounds).

  • How does this influence the way we teach blending?

Note: revisit the scaffolding examples in the module video if needed (starts at 32:14 in module 10)

Next Steps
  • Complete Module 12

  • Bring a scope and sequence from your instructional program to the next meeting for review
