Discussion
Take a look at the list of prerequisite skills. Do your students have these skills and are they ready to engage in the one-minute activities?
If your answer is no, how can you incorporate intervention and the activities in levels H, I, and J into your instruction to build these missing skills?
Take a moment to familiarize yourselves with Appendix D. How can this list be of use to you for intervention planning?
Take a moment to review the vocabulary of Mapping. Is everyone familiar with all these terms? Take time to look up any unfamiliar words in the glossary and discuss their meaning as a group.
Activity
Have participants decide as a group what strategies listed below (list under Next Steps) to explore deeper during the book study meeting (choose two or three or however many you think you will have time to explore as a group). Make sure teachers understand the “why” behind these strategies and their learning outcomes. Then plan to watch the demo videos in the module together and identify a strategy or two to implement in the classroom with individual (or team) coaching support.
*If you choose to focus on Mapping Irregular Words, during the book study meeting, explore the resources in the Meeting 9.1 Resources folder and videos for Really Great Reading and the University of Florida Literacy Institute (UFLI).
Select one or two strategies from the list below to implement in the classroom and for the next meeting be ready to debrief how it went. These activities can be used to reinforce the word study portion of a literacy block.
Next Steps
Select one or two strategies to implement in the classroom and for the next meeting be ready to debrief how it went. These activities can be used to reinforce the word study portion of a literacy block (Use as a starting point and adjust to target specific student needs).
Note: This activity is to allow teachers to become familiar with these instructional strategies. The above activities may demand further coaching for full successful implementation.
