Introductions:
  • Participants introduce themselves (if they are not all familiar with each other)

    • Name

    • Role

  • What do you hope to learn from this book study?

Housekeeping:
  • Review of the book study timeline

  • Meeting norms (See 7 Norms of Collaboration Document in resources column. These are suggestions. You may already have meeting norms you use.)

Setting the Stage:
  • The book study facilitator should have school-level reading data ready to share with the group. It helps to have aggregate as well as disaggregated data to help focus on specific populations of students with reading deficiencies (students identified with disabilities, multilingual learners; students on free and reduced lunch, BIPOC students, etc).

  • Facilitator will lead the group in reflecting on the following:

    • What is your initial response to the school reading data?

    • Are there any specific populations more in need of literacy interventions?

    • What does the data say about the effectiveness of core reading and reading intervention programs used in our school? Are our systems and instructional practices adequately targeting the needs of all our students?

  • Background Information: If participants are not already familiar with Scarborough's Reading Rope, introduce them to it to emphasize the complexity of reading.

Module Discussion

  • What are your thoughts about the reading statistics mentioned at the start of this module? What information stood out to you?

  • Think back to your pre-service teacher training. How much exposure did you have to scientific reading research? Have you done any in-service training or professional development in the science of reading after your pre-service teacher training?

  • Does our school’s reading proficiency data mirror these national statistics?

  • What further questions do you have?

Optional Activity

  • To better understand the complexities of proficient reading, take a look at Scarborough's Reading Rope (in the resource folder). How does this help shape your understanding of how people learn to read and how classroom instruction and intervention needs to touch upon all these aspects?
