In the NGSS, the number of Disciplinary Core Ideas (DCIs) is intentionally limited to allow deeper exploration and eventual mastery of key concepts as the student grows.

Figure 7 shows how the DCIs are broken into several groups, or domains: Life Sciences (LS), Physical Sciences (PS), Earth and Space Sciences (ESS), and Engineering, Technology, and Applications of Science (ETS).
