The Science and Engineering Practices (SEPs) play an important role on CMAS. As one of three dimensions, the SEP is combined with the Disciplinary Core Idea (DCI) and/or Crosscutting Concept (CCC) in order to measure student understanding of the PE.
Like the other dimensions, a practice must never be assessed in isolation. Rather, SEPs must be assessed in the context of a DCI and/or through the lens of a CCC.
The NGSS include eight SEPs that develop across the grade bands:
1. Asking Questions and Defining Problems
2. Developing and Using Models
3. Planning and Carrying Out Investigations
4. Analyzing and Interpreting Data
5. Using Mathematical and Computational Thinking
6. Constructing Explanations and Designing Solutions
7. Engaging in Argument from Evidence
8. Obtaining, Evaluating, and Communicating Information
