The NGSS are organized into Performance Expectations (PEs). Each PE provides a statement of what students should be able to do by the end of instruction. There are 45 PEs for elementary school, 59 for middle school, and 71 for high school. 

The PEs are categorized by grade or grade band (K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, MS, HS) and by domain: Life Sciences (LS), Physical Sciences (PS), Earth and Space Sciences (ESS), and Engineering, Technology, and Applications of Science (ETS).
