Evaluating Examples

Take a closer look at some examples of graduation level and course level evidence that schools collect.

Your Task: Capture notes on the academic AND essential skills you notice students demonstrating in the examples you review. No need to go in-depth with your evaluation for now -- it's enough to note that you saw a student demonstrating, for example, their Critical Thinking skills as they describe the process they used to investigate a local policy issue or the Communication skills they used to tell the story of their learning journey with evidence.

As you evaluate these examples, keep in mind that depending on the purpose, the depth and breadth of the evidence may be different. This first set includes examples to support graduation readiness and the next set are examples to support mastery of course expectations.

Reflect

What was consistent and what was different about the depth and breadth of the evidence depending on the focus? What types of academic and PWR/essential skills  were students asked to demonstrate?

Examine Practices in Your Local Context

One of the primary goals of the use of Performance Assessments is for educators to norm about the characteristics of a strong Body of Evidence. It is necessary to identify criteria that are universal enough to set a high bar of quality across the state, yet flexible enough to allow for local ownership and customization. Start by examining practices in your local district/school in the next section of this module.
